Moving from Southampton, England to Cherkassy, Ukraine, David was overwhelmed as he saw the needs of the Ukrainian people. The local church, paralyzed by the effects of years of Communist control, waits for outside help and does not pull itself up by its own boot straps.
Though daunting, David realizes it would have significant impact to start from scratch with a new generation of believers, infusing missionality, fundraising, and self-sufficiency into the DNA of the next generation of the church for Ukraine. Short-term stop-gap measures won't last. He foresees this solution will be slow and laborious, but the long-term commitment will reap far-reaching benefits.
To do this, he develops businesses to create local funding independent of Western dollars. Kafé Kreative not only provides job opportunities for youth, but CRM staff there also offer a safe place to ask questions and get answers. Proceeds from the Kafé support youth ministry in Cherkassy and beyond. The 'Mission Impossible' project sends teams of young people from all over the world on short-term mission trips to places such as Belarus, Tajikistan, Siberia, South Africa.
During these trips, participants develop leadership skills and a greater heart for missions. Profits have also allowed Kafé Kreative to contribute toward the establishment of a Christian youth center in Tajikistan.
Since 2001, Enterprise International businesses run by the Butes have helped send Ukrainian missionaries to Tanzania, Siberia and Kenya.
